Chronic Stress and The Nervous System

February 18, 20232 min read

What happens when your nervous system is dysregulated and what you can do.

Nervous system dysregulation refers to a disruption or imbalance in the normal functioning of the nervous system. The nervous system is responsible for regulating many processes in the body, including movement, sensation, thought, emotion, and autonomic functions like heart rate and blood pressure. When the nervous system is dysregulated, it can lead to a range of symptoms, including:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Insomnia

  • Chronic pain

  • Fatigue

  • Irritability

  • Mood swings

  • Panic attacks

  • Hyperactivity

A dysregulated nervous system can have a significant impact on self-esteem. The symptoms of nervous system dysregulation, such as anxiety, depression, irritability, and mood swings, can interfere with a person’s ability to function in daily life and can also have a negative impact on their perception of themselves. For example, a person who is struggling with anxiety or depression may feel that they are not good enough or that they are failing in some way, which can lower their self-esteem.

In addition, physical symptoms associated with nervous system dysregulation, such as chronic pain or fatigue, can also have a negative impact on self-esteem. These symptoms can make it difficult for a person to engage in activities they once enjoyed, leading them to feel less capable and less confident in themselves.

Furthermore, social and relational difficulties can arise as a result of nervous system dysregulation, which can also affect self-esteem. For example, a person who is struggling with anxiety may avoid social situations, leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness, which can lower their self-esteem.

In short, nervous system dysregulation can have a complex and far-reaching impact on your health.

There are several strategies that can help regulate the nervous system, including:

  1. Mindfulness practices: Mindfulness-based practices such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing can help calm the mind and reduce stress, which in turn can help regulate the nervous system.

  2. Exercise: Regular exercise can improve mood and reduce stress and anxiety, as well as increase the release of endorphins, which can have a positive impact on the nervous system.

  3. Sleep hygiene: Getting adequate sleep and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule can help regulate the nervous system.

  4. Diet: Eating a balanced diet that is rich in nutrients and low in processed foods and added sugars can help regulate the nervous system.

  5. Stress management: Managing stress through activities like therapy, journaling, or hobbies can help regulate the nervous system.

  6. Social support: Having strong social support from friends, family, or a community can help regulate the nervous system by reducing stress and improving mood.

  7. Limiting caffeine and alcohol: Limiting the consumption of caffeine and alcohol can help regulate the nervous system, as they can both disrupt sleep and increase anxiety.
